Listen on: Apple – Spotify – Soundcloud

Mat Maxwell is an American musician with almost two decades of studio and touring experience, specializing in the electric bass. He has played this instrument with some of music’s biggest names, performing all over the world. Mat is also the author of “Hired Musician: A Guide to Getting and Keeping Gigs,” a book offering insights on navigating the modern music industry. Beyond his touring and session work, Mat also enjoys teaching lessons and hosting clinics… a good cigar and tasty beverages.

What makes you uniquely qualified to discuss financial and artistic freedom for musicians?

I went from a tin ear and zero experience at age twenty to one of the biggest touring/recording acts in the world. Plenty of mistakes and luck along the way, but I’ve kept the lights on for about 15 years doing it (mostly) full-time.

What is a crazy-but-true fact about you?

The fact that I’ve skated by for thirty-seven years without anything crazy happening. That’s a non-answer, sorry. Um, I had no idea what a bass guitar was until about sixteen and my aural skills were abismal for another ten years after that.

Why is financial literacy among musicians important to you?

Because I can empathize with being financially illiterate, I understand it’s a scary place to be. I appreciate the goal of sharing info and helping one another in various aspects, especially in this regard.

What is one piece of advice you would impart on the audience?

Seek, and don’t be afraid to ask for, help.
